Overview:

In Moldova’s climate, induced disasters are occurring more frequently and on a recurring basis causing economic losses valued on average at 4 million US dollars per year. Such a risk exposure is explained by the dependence of agriculture on the amount of precipitation at country level, being the most vulnerable national economy sector. The main reason is the water deficit for agricultural needs as well as the limited capacities of planning and using the water storage infrastructure for irrigation in Moldova’s rural communities.

In this connection, the project “Promotion of climate change and disaster risk reduction solution in the water and civil protection sectors for enhanced rural resilience” aims to strengthen rural communities’ adaptive capacities to climate changes and disasters by improving the water storage infrastructure and disaster risk reduction measures. The project’s main goal is to facilitate the implementation of smart water management solutions for farming, flood management, fire prevention and extension of community rescuer/firefighter teams in Moldova’s rural environment. The geographic areas of activity and intervention are limited to five districts – Cantemir, Criuleni, Hîncești, Leova and Ungheni. The project is funded by the Austrian Development Agency and implemented by the United Nations Development Program.

One of the project’s activities is to build basins for storing water from precipitation to help farmers cope with the effects of the disasters induced by climate changes. The beneficiaries of the basins for storing water from precipitations are the farmers who need an infrastructure for collecting and storing water to cover the irrigation needs of circa five ha of farming land.
